11th Floor
52 Lime Street
EC3M 7AF
This panel discussion will look to explore some of the challenges and recent developments in fraud and asset recovery, particularly in challenging jurisdictions. Some of the questions we’ll look to cover include: • Does the current political landscape help to increase regulatory scrutiny? Does it also “inspire” certain market players to become “more creative” in hiding assets and money flows? What are the implications for legal teams and investigators and what can investigators do to increase chances of asset discovery? • Do sanctions encourage the use of offshore jurisdictions to evade enforcement and penalties? Or can the use of offshore structures increasingly alert authorities and imply there is potentially something to hide? • The recent reshaping of the energy map in Europe creates a shifting asset recovery landscape – but what is on and off the table for asset recovery purposes?

Sanctions investigation and enforcement in the new (wild) west: Have the sheriffs left town?
Collas Crill LLP, BCL Solicitors, 3 Raymond Buildings Chambers
The Law Society
113 Chancery Lane
WC2A 1PL
In the world of financial crime, the US has been the international policeman throughout most of our professional lifetimes. For better or worse, the US' self-appointed role was predictable: Western governments could shape their policies and laws around the US lead; those advising western businesses and citizens could advise accordingly. The Trump Administration's dramatic re-set to a more transactional USA on the international stage threatens chaos. Has the sheriff handed in its badge and gun? With wars in Ukraine and Gaza, a nuclear North Korea, an increasingly militaristic China with closer alignment with Russia and Iran, and lack of stable government across much of Africa, more than ever Western businesses face serious risk as friends become enemies and vice versa. We know that nature abhors a vacuum. What will fill it? Predictable and stable UK/EU based regulation? A minefield of conflicting national laws, rules and local practices? Shifting alliances of superstates and trading blocs where only wealth and might make right? Our panel of experts in international sanctions and financial crime will give their views about what comes next and how we in the UK and offshore can prepare for it. Speakers: • Nin Ritchie - Partner, Collas Crill • John Binns - Partner, BCL Solicitors • Rachel Barnes KC, 3 Raymond Buildings
